ToggleHow do you choose the Best Salmon Lures for Rivers?
When choosing the best salmon lures for rivers fishing, you should make sure that each lure has a specific purpose.
For example, one lure might be highly effective in getting bites when it’s being fished alone, while another is designed to work better when multiple of them are being used together.
Here are some tips on how to choose the best salmon bait for rivers:
- Size and Shape: When you’re choosing a lure, it’s essential to think about the size range of fish in your target area. Generally speaking, bigger lures work better when there are large populations of big fish in an area. A small lure might attract some small bass, but the giant bass will usually be more interested in a larger lure. Ensure that your bait is not too big or too small for the fish in the area before you cast out your line. The size of certain features like eyes or tails will often determine how well they attract Salmon when they see them in the water. For example, bigger eyes will usually be more effective than smaller ones.
- Line weight: Generally, you won’t want to use a light tackle when fishing for Salmon in rivers. A 10-20 pound test line is an excellent weight to use when you’re out on the water. If you can’t choose between two different weights, try using them side by side to see which one works better in your situation. Remember that if your line is too big or too small for the fish around you, it will be hard to get a bite.
- Line type: When you’re out on the water, it’s a good idea to have a line around your body so you can adjust it quickly if necessary. You also want to make sure that any barbs are removed from your line before you set out onto the river. This will ensure that your lure stays on the line as long as possible and will allow you to get the most bites out of your lures.
- Hooks: A good salmon lure needs a strong hook that can hold up to the pull from one of these fish. Choose hooks appropriate for your line and bait size, and remember that there should be enough room for your bait to fit so the fish can swallow it easily.
- Color: Different salmon lures have different colors, and the color of a lure is one of the primary considerations when you’re choosing one. Highly reflective surfaces are often good at attracting the attention of fish that eat surface-feeding carnivores. However, bright colors or lights might also attract the attention of potential prey that will take the bait before a salmon has a chance to eat it.
- Materials: Make sure that the lures you choose are made from durable materials like brass, copper, bone, and wood. In general, these types of construction materials work better than plastic when you’re using them for fishing salmon in rivers.
- Vibration: Some lures will vibrate or create noise when they’re in the water, which can attract fish because of how it mimics their prey moving around after being injured by another predator. However, fish might also hear these sounds as a sign that something is trying to eat them, and you might end.

Notes: Please do not touch the hooks when you put them on lures or baits; otherwise, scratches and weakens the bond of glue, which will affect your fishing action.
If you are a beginner salmon angler and don’t know where to start, this is the perfect kit for you. These high-quality fishing lures are very durable and will last you throughout your fishing trips.
The JSHANMEI Fishing Lure Kit also comes with an instructional manual that provides valuable information on what types of lures work best and how to rig them for maximum fish attraction.

If you’re new to fishing and don’t know what kind of fish you’re going after, this kit allows you to put together a variety of lures that will help attract multiple types of fish.
The instructional manual also provides some tips on how to use the different lures, so even if you don’t get all your information from the online guide, there are tips for using each of these lures inside the kit.
This salmon fishing lure is designed to be used in rivers, but it can also be used in a variety of freshwater conditions as well. The wide range of sizes and colors ensures that you’ll have lures to use in all types of fish, and the durable design means that these lures can be used for years without sacrificing any of their functionality.
Another great feature of this salmon fishing kit is the price. Because it comes with a wide range of different lure sizes, you’re getting a lot more value for your money.
How to catch Salmon from shore
Your choice of lure is significant. Use a salmon or trout-specific lure, and make sure that it is durable enough to withstand the strong pull of a salmon in its natural environment. A lure with a treble hook that is offset should also be used.
How to fish for Salmon from the shoreline?
1) Location. This depends on where you are, but as a general rule, we find that Salmon are most active in the first two hours of daylight, the best time to get out as you will find the fish feeding actively all around you.
2) Shape and Color of Lure. This is a debatable subject – some people swear by colored lures for catching Salmon, others prefer natural colors like brown, red, or bunker (white). The best lure shape is also subject to an argument; some people prefer a dace style float as it is easier for the fish to see, others a large tube or even an attractor fly.
3) Depth. Salmon feed all around the shoreline, so you have lots of options here – the key thing to remember, though, is it’s best to keep your lure out in the deep water. This may mean you are casting from rocks or cliffs, but once you find a good spot, stay on it.
4) Size of Float. Although this is not such an issue with freshwater fishing, I am often asked what size float should be used to catch Salmon? My answer is always the same: as big as possible – most people use an 8-inch float or even a 10 inch one. If you are fishing in fast water, then a lightweight float will act as live bait and help retain your lure in the strike zone (you don’t want to lose your rig).
5) Weather. The wind and the weather is a crucial factor. If it’s windy, then don’t bother fishing as you will lose your rig – if there is any sign of rain, then put your rig away too as it won’t fish for the next few days at least.
6) Time. As with all types of Salmon, fishing timing is everything, so get out early to catch the first of the run and try and time it so you will be fishing in good light.
7) Fish Aggression. As with all Salmon, I find that the fish are incredibly aggressive. The best technique to present your bait is on a downrigger, as this allows you total control over the depth of your lure.
The best time to catch Salmon is at night. The reason I say this is that more often than during the day, they seem to hang around the weed edges or in areas with lots of wobbles – which can be a problem as it removes their interest from your lure.
In these areas, fish take whatever takes their fancy without much fuss, and so you may find that your lure won’t attract their interest.
Salmon fishing techniques: (Salmon Fishing for Beginners)
As for all types of salmon fishing, your choice of location can make or break your day. Small areas of weed provide a visible target for the Salmon to home in on but may not be ideal as you will have less room to maneuver with your rod, and also, the fish are likely to be aggressive if they feel trapped in a specific place.
Other areas where you may find Salmon lurking are around rocky sections of shoreline where Salmon can hide out in the gaps or also along with deeper parts of the shore.
This means that you will have to fish deeper and use heavier lures to get them up, but it also gives you more room to play with and a greater chance of landing your catch.
The best way to approach salmon fishing is to look for a few spots where you can cast out into water deeper than your float.
That way, you will have the chance of landing your catch if it bites, as well as having the option of moving in closer to shore if necessary or move away from the bank once you have hooked a fish.
This is not ideal for those who like to keep everything on the bank as you will have no option apart from landing it straight away, but if you enjoy playing and fighting your fish, this could be for you.
Plan and take a few rigs with lighter floats, just in case you catch one of these smaller Salmon (which are usually released anyway).
Best time to catch Salmon
You may know that the best time to go salmon fishing is during fall.
Salmon usually migrate in late summer, and their journey upstream can be a grueling one, so they’re hungry for easy prey!
By spring, these fish are often used up from all of this hard work catching them becomes much more difficult; steelhead trout tend to become more specific targets.
Spring’s also good if you want an alternative species like brown or rainbow trout. By then, insects start becoming abundant again, making it perfect timing where food sources abound for our favorite freshwater fish friends before winter sets back into place yet again.
In the summer, salmon fishing can be a bit tricky because of high water temperatures. Summer’s also prone to water levels that aren’t as consistent as in fall and spring.
Winter season, on the other hand, is pretty much out – well, unless you head for some pretty northern areas where it never gets too cold for these fish to survive, so to fish for them – but because of all this, I think that fall is probably the best time to catch Salmon.
Basics of Salmon Fishing & Nighttime Tactic
Salmon fishing can be downright exciting. But, if you’re new to it, the prospect of catching this powerful fish might scare you a little. After all, Salmon are strong, and they’ve got all those sharp teeth!
There’s nothing to be afraid of. With the right tactics, no fish can beat a true sports fisherman.
Salmon Fishing Tips
To increase your opportunities of landing your first Salmon, you need to understand a few basics.
- Salmon are bottom-feeders, and they love eating small fish and tiny frogs, insects, and crustaceans.
- That’s why the best time for catching them is early in the morning and late at night when there’s no light in the sky. Once you’re out there, look for a place where they’ll feel safe at night-time and start fishing.
- If your spot isn’t working, move to one of the spots you’ve marked earlier.
- Salmon are nocturnal creatures, and they don’t like bright sunlight, so, if you can, try fishing at night-time. This is also when they’re most active, so make sure that you’ve got enough time before you begin the hunt; otherwise, if you haven’t found anything in one or two hours, it’s time to move on and try somewhere else.
- There are a few things that Salmon like to eat at night – tiny fish (such as dace) and other small creatures (such as frogs, insects, and crayfish). To pull one of these fish out of the water, you’ll need to use something that looks just like their natural prey.
What color lures do Salmon like? (Best salmon lure colors)
Obviously, the color that attracts Salmon is green. What sound do they like? Use a lure with sounds of flowing water or bubbles coming up from below in order to give it an authentic touch and attract more fish.
All colors work well except for blue: think about why this may be true.

Salmon River fishing setup
It’s hard to imagine the number of different lures, bait, and hooks you could use for a day on the water. A standard setup might consist of:
– A snap swivel at one end of your mainline line;
– One leader from 12″ – 48″;
– A single hook with egg loop;
– a corky above it (to keep your lure floating upright); and finally, some yarn wrapped around that same hook
What kind of lures work best for salmon fishing?
Are you wondering what the best lures for Salmon are? Use soft-plastic lures or live bait and make sure that the hook is large enough to hold a big fish.
Remember that Salmon usually don’t eat very often because they’ve got all kinds of energy stored up from feeding on krill, plankton, and other tiny creatures during their summer migration. So, if you can get one to bite, you’ll need a solid fishing line.
White is great for freshwater Salmon and steelhead, but they work well for saltwater species as well. Silver and gold lures will bring in fish even if the water is murky or dark. Black, blue, and chartreuse are not good colors to use at night.
Best lures for spawning salmon
If you happen to know the exact time frame for salmon spawning, it’s easy to catch live fish during this process.
Just use a spinning reel and spool your line with a 20 – 30 lb test line, making sure that there are 5 feet of extra line on each end so that you can control where the lure is in the water.
Usually, they’ll bite within the first two casts, but sometimes it takes a little bit longer to put them on your hook.
As for the lures’ size, just remember that those fish are smaller, so you can go with thinner lures and still get bites.

The best bait for chinook salmon
Chinook salmon are large fish, both in length and weight, so they’re attracted to larger lures.
These can be enlarged up to 6 feet long and weigh over 100 lbs (the record was broken at 45 kg / 99 lb). If you don’t want to break any records, go with small lures instead.
However, if you want to try something different, feel free to use bacon and salmon eggs instead of traditional baits. Those are great too!

Best lures for Coho salmon in Lake Michigan
In general, Coho salmon are highly aggressive fish, and they’ll attack all kinds of lures. Just a few matters that you should know about them:
- Coho salmon is attracted to bright colors.
- Also, Coho salmon fish like moving objects in the water (for example, flies -and big barbells.)
- Coho salmon fish is very easy to take on spin fishing setups, especially if you have a reel with perfect drag and a slower retrieve.
- Coho prefers small lures (such as #2 or #4), so make sure you’ve got many of them on hand. They also like the colors green, red and purple – but if you don’t have any of these at hand, try something else.
- There are some objections, though: when it comes to luring in coho salmon, this fish seems not to care about the size of the lure.
So, something small but bright will work well too. Just ensure that the hook is powerful enough to throw them into the air if you want to catch a fish!
If you want to catch Coho, try fishing at dawn and dusk when they’re likely to be active. The excellent news is that you can catch them all year round in the Great Lakes region.

Questions & Answers about salmon fishing baits & Lures (FAQ)
How do you get Salmon to bite you?
The fish have been unusually uncooperative today. I tried everything from live bait to roe on a hook, but they just weren’t biting! But then it hit me—I’ll put so much weight that the line will sag when it’s cast upstream and bounce along the bottom of the river like an artificial lure would do. That’s what brought in this 30-inch rainbow trout we had for dinner last night!
What kind of hook do you use for Salmon?
No specific kind of hooked is needed. However, traditional salmon or steelhead hooks with strong short shank eyes (eye pointing upward) types are often used depending on river conditions and what kind of baits they intend to operate according to how big that particular fish is may bite at them under different circumstances.
How fast should you troll for Salmon?
Salmon trolling speeds can be anywhere from 1.5 to 3.5 mph, depending on your setup and the types of dodgers you have at hand when fishing for them! Dodger design is a significant factor in determining troll speed because if they start spinning while going too fast, it will mess up their effectiveness and make casting more difficult since there’s less control over how much line out or reel back happens with each throw.
Do Salmon eat worms?
The Atlantic salmon is a highly skilled predator that can feed on anything from tiny crustaceans to shrimps, squid, worms, and fish. The opportunities for this apex aquatic animal are wide open in both deep and shallow water with different light levels.
Does Powerbait work for Salmon?
Yes, you can! If it’s one thing we know how to do well at POWERBAIT is catching fish. And the best part about our bait? You don’t need any special skills because power bait will catch a fish for anyone no matter what they’re throwing out there in the water.
